The ambition
Surrey County Council was created in 1889 and works for the 1.2 million residents in Surrey to provide a variety of services. These include the standard responsibilities of county councils in England and Wales, such as transport and highway management, waste disposal and education. “Every single person at Surrey County Council has a unique opportunity to make Surrey a better place to live. Whether it's by protecting people from harm, making Surrey's roads safer or conserving our beautiful countryside.” Conservation and sustainability are high on the council’s agenda, so investigating renewable energy solutions is a priority. The Council wanted to decarbonise the facility as part of their net zero efforts.
The solution
RenEnergy’s solar carport provides clean, cost-effective energy for the council by using the existing car park, real estate that is otherwise underutilised, without losing a single parking space. We designed, supplied and installed the custom-made solution to maximise available space and energy yield, engineered from the ground up. In order to have financing secured and mobilised efficiently, we specifically planned the project in an agile manner to allow for this.
Apart from technical designs, we design practical ergonomic solutions that take factors such as driver visibility, vehicle door opening and traffic management plans into account. The commercial solar carport comprise a bespoke structure with high-spec solar panels that are energy dense and provide good yield. The 495m² generating surface was orientated South. The compact design and innovative ground fixings allowed a quick and efficient build, with minimal disruption to the site.

The benefits
Average annual CO2 savings estimated at 26,5 tonnes – that’s the equivalent of 13 petrol cars driving for a year
Reduced electricity expenditure directly impacts the council’s operational costs
The council uses the vast majority of its total energy consumption during the day, matching peak solar generation
The council significantly reduced its environmental impact and reliance of fossil fuels
The installation provides a visible display of the council’s commitment to the environment
